Animal hair was historically added to backing coats of lime render and plaster. Adding plastering hair gives extra strength and minimises shrinking and cracking. It allows thicker coats to be applied to uneven walls and holds plaster keys in place when plastering onto lath.
Horse hair is straight cut and bundled into 50mm (2”) knots available in 1kg bags.

NB. Due to chemical treatment for anthrax, the acid washing breaks down the natural keratin in the hair. Imported horse hair is only to be added to lime plaster immediately before use and NOT to be stored in lime as it will further degrade and will become not fit for purpose.
As an alternative use Polypropylene Fibre which is much stronger, disperses better in the mix and is chemically inert and won’t rot or degrade once added to high alkali lime.
